First settled nearly 2000 years ago, the city of Riga, Latvia in Northern Europe is among the more fantastically beautiful places in the EU. It is also one of the least traveled. As such, it is a wonderfully interesting tourist destination for those looking for a taste of old world Europe without all of the crazy crowds and over priced bistros. Long serving as an important stop in trade routes from East to West (due to its location along the majestic Daugava River), Riga has benefited from its position. As the capitol of Latvia, the historic city center is simply magical. Although many of the earliest structures have been lost to wars and fires, there are still numerous aspects of medieval, neoclassical, and art nouveau architecture to surprise and delight.
Among the more interesting and popular spots to check out is the Rīgas Doms or Riga Cathedral. This medieval-Romanesque wonder built in the early 1200s it is still a place of Protestant worship; there are also various other events, including concerts held within its hallowed walls. The dominating features of the interior are the glorious stained glass windows which cover both religious and political history and fill the heart of the church with a prismatic dance of light. Also make sure to get a peek at the colossal pipe organ with pipes ranging in size from half an inch to an astounding 33 feet tall. After the cathedral, put on a pair of comfortable sturdy shoes and walk the streets of Riga to get a first hand look at what put this city center on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Here you will find the largest collection of art nouveau structures anywhere in the world. Highly ornamental and intricate façades will fill your eyes and your camera.
While you are there, don’t forget to take time and smell the roses. Riga’s parks and shops are filled with among the most intriguing and beautiful flowers anywhere. Your nights will be packed with theatre, opera, and ballet performances in the wonderful National Opera House of Latvia. There is also a thriving night life scene for those looking for something a bit more adventurous. Days will be packed with plenty of shopping, the Food Market, fantastic little tea houses and cafés, and delicious chocolate! How the chocolate from Riga is not world famous is a mystery. Take note that although “Old Town” is the more popular place to visit, the entirety of the city of Riga has plenty to offer, so make sure to afford some time to check the rest of the city out.
