The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge. Named for the Golden Gate Straight that it crosses, the bridge was the engineering achievement of Joseph B Strauss. Although told that such a bridge could not be built, construction began on January 5, 1933. After about 4 and a half years and at a cost of $35 million and 11 workers lives; the bridge opened to pedestrians on May 27, 1937 and to automotive traffic the following day. At the time of construction it was the longest suspension bridge in the world but it has since been surpassed by 8 other bridges including the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City.
