Deep in the heart of Texas, steps away from the infamous Alamo, and 20 feet down from the street; along the San Antonio River sits Paseo del Rio, better known to most as San Antonio River Walk. Paved with beautiful cobblestone walkways, fantastic bridges, and remarkable architecture, San Antonio River Walk is the one nightlife hot spot that is actually fun for the whole family. Officially recognized as a park by the city of San Antonio, River Walk is famous for its many restaurants, museums, pubs, mariachi bands, river taxis, shops, and entertainment venues pleasing even the most finicky of nightlife connoisseurs. Currently undergoing renovations to extend it from three miles to thirteen, this historic waterway is calling for you to visit and see why it’s true that everything is bigger in Texas.
One of the things to first catch your eye will be the effortless blend of old and new that characterizes this vibrant strip of land. Over 400 years of history have branded themselves on the landscape leaving a flavor that is purely San Antonio. Marvelously well preserved Spanish Colonial missions from the 1700s are paired with the 1940s era Casa Rio (River Walk’s first restaurant) and thoroughly modern attractions like Club Rive (four distinctly awesome clubs rolled into one). Some spots are great for a rollicking good time while others are filled with unpolluted peace where the native landscaping and babbling river lull you into harmony with the world around you.
By far the craziest party at San Antonio River Walk is the annual Michelob ULTRA River Walk Mud Festival. For one week each January, a section of the river is drained to allow for clean up of the silty deposits at the bottom. With thousands in attendance each year enjoying the mud art contests, parades, pub crawl, and coronation of the Mud King and Queen, a good time is guaranteed. The rest of the year you can expect to see weddings, hear outstanding jazz musicians, be awed by local arts and crafts shows, and so much more. San Antonio River Walk is a place of beauty, a hub of the finest in entertainment, and one of the best places to grab a bite to eat in Texas. With so much to do and see, you’re sure to want to come back again and again.
