North of Farmington, New Mexico, near the Mesa Verde National Monument sits an incredibly unique bed and breakfast. Kokopelli’s Cave Bed & Breakfast is a luxurious one bedroom cave home that has been carved out of a sandstone formation 280 feet above the La Plata River. This amazing location in the four corners area where New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah meet gives guests views of some of the most exceptional and amazing scenery one can imagine. The cave itself is located 70 feet below the surface with its entrance along the cliff face. Originally created in 1980 for father and son Bruce Black Sr & Jr. as a unique office for their business, it was used as a residence by Bruce Black Jr. and his wife in 1996 for a year before it was turned into a bed and breakfast.
This hotel is definitely not for grandma and grandpa or inactive folks and guests must sign a liability waiver in order to stay. Upon checking in at the innkeeper’s home you are lead to the cliff face entrance. Once there you walk down a sloping path that has been carved out of the sandstone until you reach the short ladder that takes you to flagstone porch at the entrance of the home. Kokopelli’s Cave is decorated in a beautiful southwestern style that complements the sandstone interior superbly. With plush carpeting, hot and cold running water, a flagstone hot tub and a wonderful cascading waterfall-style shower, your stay at the cave is more about comfort in an amazing surrounding rather than roughing it. The cave also features two small balconies built into the cliff that provide guests with magnificent views of the surrounding scenery. One of the balconies has a grill along with chairs to relax on and enjoy the natural setting.
Although meals are not provided at Kokopelli’s Cave the well appointed kitchen is fully stocked with all the fruit and fixin’s needed to make an amazing breakfast. A stay at the Kokopelli’s Cave is pricey but not outrageous with 2009s rates of $260 per night for 1-2 people and $300 per night for parties of 3-4. It is truly an amazing experience for outdoor lovers that enjoy hiking and being out in nature yet still want some of the comforts that a luxury bed and breakfast provides. Just image how nice it would be to come back from a day out hiking and then unwind in the soothing flagstone hot tub.
