5. Winnipeg Folk Festival, Canada

This awesome outdoor music festival held in early to mid July in Birds Hill Park, Manitoba can be a truly messy festival. Although not technically part of the festival, along with enjoying a several days of music you are sure to encounter lots and lots of mud. Nearly 40 years old, you can expect some of the biggest names in Folk music each and every year. This is definitely one of those festivals you are going to want to prepare to camp out for. Aside from the music and mud there are numerous fantastic art exhibitions you will want to check out. So pack your bags and get ready to get dirty!

4. Summer Redneck Games, Georgia

Mud, beer, bobbin’ for pig’s feet, and even an armpit serenade, what more could you as for? The Summer Redneck Games deliver on all that and more including its messiest event, the Mudpit Belly Flop. Sort of a satire on the Olympics, every July this over the top festival sees around 100,000 people a year getting a little drunk and a lot messy. Parades, Budweiser, and hubcap hurling are just a few of the sites you can expect to see here. It’s full out filthy fun as revelers dig into that red Georgia dirt and get down to their roots (literally and figuratively). Just an all out laid back good time, the Summer Redneck Games are a great grimy time for all. We think you’ll agree that it’s definitely worthy of our list of messiest festivals in the world.

3. La Tomatina, Spain

If you go to La Tomatina be prepared to be pelted with tomatoes since the highlight of this festival is a battle with 45 tons of overripe tomatoes as ammunition and over 20,000 participants. For a full hour the battle roars with tomatoes exploding all over the place until the mob is doused with water hoses to signal the end. Buñol, Spain is home to the annual La Tomatina tomato fight festival. Held the last Wednesday of August you can expect lots of fun, sun, wine, and great food. So grab a pair of goggles, your appetite, and your sense of adventure and prepare for a day of tomato drenched adventure.

2. Boryeong Mud Festival, South Korea

Next on the list is another mud related festival, and this one completely revolves around the stuff. Once renowned for its rich agriculture, Boryeong City now draws millions of visitors for a different reason, their mineral rich mud which is purportedly very good for your skin. The Koreans are famous for loving drinking and crazy parties, so you know that this festival will live up to its messy reputation. If you enjoy a good Korean beer and getting doused in mud, this is the party for you. Lots of great music, food, and fun loving people are also easily found. Be prepared to get very dirty while you enjoy music, dancing, mud wrestling and of course drinking.

1. Batalla del Vino, Spain

And our #1 messiest festival in the world is a wine battle in Spain! Clearly when it comes to messy parties, the Spanish are king! They have the tomato festival at number 3, but the Batalla del Vino has got all the rest of these festivals knocked. You will have wine in every last place you can imagine. Unlike a lot of festivals around the world that celebrate something specific, this party is about loving life. Like the tomato battle, goggles are probably a good idea. Other than that there is little to prepare for. You’ll get next to no sleep, eat copious amounts of delicious local food, and be surrounded by thousands of gallons of amazing wine and wonderful people.
